In a few of the videos, they show the artist spraying clear coat on to the finished painting. Sometimes, even with fire! HOT DAMN! my question is;
Should i spray a coat of clear onto the finished painting? and if i light it on fire to do so, does it make a difference?

Hi Pun! the clear coat on a finished piece does make a difference, it brings out the colours, also using clear coat makes the paint wet again for any finishing touches, once you start using clear coat you cant be without it, I think the whole setting on fire thing is for show really, it just dries instantly, but looks cool. Be careful... watch those eye lashes!!! |

I agree - a final coat of clear does help the colors - and it helps seal it a bit so the colors dont flatten over time. And yeah once you start using clear you'll never be without it - I use it in just about every piece at one point or another - usually to re-wet an area that I'm adding to.
As far as the setting on fire thing - I've done it a few times - it really is just to dry the paint quickly either so you can hand it over to a buyer or so that you can continue working on a piece that is too wet and drying too slowly. I wouldn't suggest it - but if you must - make sure you dont set your painting (or yourself!) on fire. It can destroy a painting if not put out immediately! lol

Thanks guys! I am definitely going to apply a finishing coat of clear on my next one to see the difference! And then, if im feeling comfortable enough, i think ill try the fire! ( I MUST ) So if im not online for awhile, its because i either; caught myself on fire, caught the garage on fire, or blew up. If i did blow up, at least it would be in an explosion of color!

Yeah when I first tried the fire thing I too was in my garage - my wife was at work - and the main surprise was the instnt heat. I didn't expect the flame to be THAT hot... but it wasn't bad. And it worked for what I needed - there was entirely too much paint down and I used the heat to salvage the painting.

I used the "Fire" before.... OMG never again. I totaly destroyed the piece i THOUGHT I was finishing. Darn thing cooked the paint.
But in reference to the clear. Heck yeah. I couldnt imagin not useing it. I dont normally clear coat the entire painting unless I used non gloss paint.
