I'm surprised there isn't more mixed media involved with what we do. I mean, it seems quite clear that we, the spray artist, are pretty inventive with the tools that we use to create, yet I haven't seen a lot of painters mixing the media with anything else. Maybe I just dont get out enough! lol
But for example - I showed my family the spray artform and both of my artistic aunts were wondering if I had ever tried doing acrylic paintings because it involves some similar techniques. Of course it also frustrated them to see that I could basically put down a quick 15 minute landscape painting that could be an exact copy of one of my aunt's acrylic landscapes that she sat for 4 hours putting together. (she likes to paint on-sight)
But I would assume that mixing the media could be a potential evolutionary leg of this artform - possibly creating a new branch of spraypaint art. But what would be integrated with it? How would it interact with other forms of paint? Or even pastels or pen & ink or whatever? And even though it would still be art - would it be well received by the spraypaint art community? Or would it be considered an unpure (couldn't use the other word I was thinking) form and therefore not true to the history of spraypaint art?
Has anyone in this forum seen any integration with spraypaint art? Any good examples where spraypaint has been used in mixed media pieces? Or bad examples for that matter?
Art & the artist are ever changing... ever evolving... constantly learning and expanding...

some good questions raised here. I have seen airbrushing mixed with spray paint, zaz does alot of mixed media, and we also had a mixed media contest in the members area at spacepaintings.com some time back.

ah yes - airbrush... it seems that airbrushing and spray paint art could very easily go hand in hand, and I also see how one could lead to the other.
a mixed media contest eh - that sounds fun! I think some of guys on the forum might have a little trouble thinking outside the box like that. but I'm sure you got some cool results. Sometime soon I need to buy into the members forum so I can see the other side of the spacepaintings.com world.

I'm going to try Encaustic art ( Google it! ) mixed with spray art, when i get time!!!! life just gets in the way of creativity, but the summers coming here in England, so i can open the Lab once again!.... Nice topic!!!
I use other media all the time. I paint with oils and acrylics all the time. On woods metals platics... I like to tell people that EVERYTHING can be used in some manner.
At the moment I am working on a two piece, piece that is painted with spray paint on 3/4 in MDF that I primed for working. After painting the space portion I moved it to my studio and am not working on it in acrylics. I thought about even adding oil paints but I realy realy hate the time it takes to dry.
i dont no i think most spray painters dont try mixed media cuz then your like getting into it to far you no i think thats one thing that makes us like spray painting or at least me...i think people dont do it cuz like you sed we can sit down and slam out a beautiful masterpiece in 15 20 mins where for other artists it takes hours you no..it would just complacate spray painting to much to use mixed media..idk thats what i think at least
I have been mixing my arcylics, watercolors and 3d paintings with spray paints for two yrs. now. have sold many at my shows but have pics in my albums, i didnt post any on this site because my understanding mixed media wasnt allowed , i would love too post a couple if allowed and would mark mixed media and what medias were used, just didnt think they would be welcomed,,, thats why i have a seperate page on myspace for my other art forms, so since I was already using spray paint with my other art, this summer when i found this site, i had too check it out, and i do so enjoy the form. my leaves i had posted were mixed media, because i did the branches, stems and vines in paint pens,,, well anyways, i find the all the medias have blended well and help us.... let me know if anyone objects too my posting some stuff so people can expand and explore all avenues... if not they are in safe keeping on myspace under LADY LINDA, IF ANYONE WANTS TOO SEE, MSG. ME, SO I CAN PUT TOO PUBLIC VIEW.... PEACE TOO ALL. LINDA
I have a couple of examples of mixed media upload. One is spraypaint, ink, paint pen, oil and acrylics. It feature a giant atlas type figure shrouded in lightning. I did it in 2004. I believe it all blended well and is a good mix. Joe
